Realm Outfitter Commentary

This is one of my favorite knives. The back edge is a good sharp 90-degree angle, so it is great for throwing sparks off Ferro rods. There is no jimping, which I’d like to see a little bit of, yet, it doesn’t seem to affect the performance. The tip you will notice is mostly in the middle of the blade, by the middle I mean matching up with the centerline of the knife. This makes a great tool for boring holes in wood, such as starting fires with bow drills etc… The stonewash is a nice touch and does well at hiding scratches. The one complaint offered with this knife is about lacquer coated Micarta handle. This by itself is fine and gives a nice shiny effect, but DO NOT let alcohol (or presumably other solvents) get on it. I was trying to clean my knife with alcohol and discovered it erodes the lacquer into a huge mess of uneven sticky clumps. It took me several more ‘sessions’ to remove it completley. If removed you have the regular Micarta material underneath. I actually like it better this way, but we want the buyer to be aware. That shiny handle is due to a lacquer finish that doesn’t like solvents. Otherwise, as stated, this is one of my favorites when camping or bush crafting. It is ESEE heat-treated 1095 carbon steel. That means it will quickly take a razor-sharp edge, as well as a beating. It is also backed by ESEE’s lifetime use or abuse policy.

ESEE PR4-BO Black Oxide Fixed Blade w/ Dark Tan Sheath
When it comes to wilderness chores, sometimes simple and straightforward is the best approach. The ESEE Camp-Lore PR4 is Patrick Rollins’ take on Horace Kephart’s classic design. The original prototype was made by James Gibson and tested extensively by Patrick during survival classes, off-trail backpacking, hiking and camping. The Rowen built production PR4 features a 4″ blade with a 4.75″ handle, 1/8″ thick 1095 HC steel blade, 90 degree spine for striking a Ferro rod and a leather pouch sheath. It may not be pretty but it is designed to work, like all the other ESEE Knives.

Care/Maintenance: ESEE carbon steel knives are made from 1095 steel. 1095 is a top choice for professional cutlery designed for hard use, it will rust and stain if not properly cared for – especially on the cutting edge and around the laser engraving. It is the user’s responsibility to keep the blades properly lubricated and cleaned. We suggest using a dry film rust inhibitor such as TUF-GLIDE or TUF-CLOTH.
